More about this scale

1 2 3 5 6 7

It never commits to 4 or ♯4, which is why it sits on both maj7 and maj7♯11. Stack all six in thirds and you get maj13 (no 11): every note is a chord tone.

Zero tritones, and five perfect fourth/fifth dyads — the most of any hexachord, and it is the only one that reaches five. Step three degrees and every interval in the cycle comes out perfect.

Also called: Ionian/Lydian hexatonic · major pentatonic + 7

Tritones: none · Set class 6-32 · Guidonian / major / diatonic hexachord

A short cycle: the one comes round quickly.

Routines

A graded ladder. Keep the scale, work down the list, and play each step at three speeds, each double the last.

  1. 1Up and down· sarali varisai

Straight up and down, then the same notes re-ordered into cells.

  2. 2Going higher· melsthayi varisai

The same material, carried into the upper octave.

  3. 3Coming down· mandrasthayi varisai

The mirror image. Descending gets less practice, so it has its own rung.

  4. 4Doubled notes· janta varisai

Every note played twice, for an even attack.

  5. 5Skips· dhatu varisai

Leaps instead of steps: thirds, fourths and the scale's own chords.

  6. 6Across the talas· alankaram

The pattern stays; the rhythmic cycle changes. The seven talas usually taught first.
